Midnight Promises

"Promise me,"
he said,
"promise you'll never give up."
He asks this of me
unaware he's asking
to drag me through shards of glass.

"I promise." I respond,
tears slipping down my cheeks.
I would follow him,
barefoot,
across hot coals.

He holds me tight
as I engrave this moment,
the promise,
into my unstable mind.

We are two allied fighters
on a treacherous battlefield.
But while we fight side by side
we are fighting different wars.

Lying in each other's arms
we are the other's armor.
So I hold on to him tighter.

"I promise."
I whisper into the darkness.

  1. Well said! Those promises are hard but important to make to ourselves and to others. Thanks for expressing so much in this poem. Things that need to be said are hard but valuable.

  2. Your words show so much strength and express this well. I like "Lying in each other's armor, So I hold on to him tighter." So clear...so perfect. Jackie http://familytrove.blogspot.com/
